Grant Awarded! ACFF Community Oral Health Workers (COHW) Project to Begin February 2018
The UCLA Center for Children’s Oral Health (UCCOH) is excited to announce that the ACFF Community Oral Health Workers (COHW) Project with Dr. Francisco Ramos-Gomez has been selected as a recipient for the ACFF Canada-United States Chapter Interprofessional Grants 2017!
The ACFF Community Oral Health Workers (COHW) project is planned to begin in February 2018 and run until February 2019. The project’s goal is to reduce the burden of dental disease in children ages 0-5 years in Los Angeles County (LAC). By kindergarten, 56% of children experience caries (50% statewide), and by 3rd grade over 70% had a history of decay with only 21% (28% statewide) having received preventive sealants. Early childhood caries are concentrated disproportionately in children of color in low socioeconomic families. This project will train and mentor ten caregivers/parents to become Community Oral Health Workers (COHWs) who will utilize the train-the-trainer model by providing local oral health promotion to other caregivers of young children in their community.
For this project, we will work with the Hope Street Family Center, a collaborative program of UCLA and California Hospital Medical Center. Additionally, we will work very closely with Inese Verzemnieks, PhD, RN, who is a professor at the UCLA School of Nursing and the Project Director of the UCLA Center for Vulnerable Populations Research (CVPR).
